Pipeline Project
WSM has
marked a new milestone in its history by providing its
chlorination services for a 17kilometer long large diameter
trunk water main on behalf of South East Water. The aim of this
SEW project was to increase their distribution capability by
50%, from 45 to 68 million litres a day, helping to keep an
abundant supply of fresh, clean water to the 300,000 households
within the supply area.
WSM’s part in this £17 million
project was to provide the disinfection and water quality
sampling services for the pipeline, ensuring no harmful
bacteriological presence prior to the whole system being bought
into operation.
The project required a
significant amount of planning by WSM’s experienced office
staff. Their detailed programs of work and annotated map packs
significantly assisted the onsite staff, helping to simplify
their heavy workload.
The large diameter of the main
also provided an excellent opportunity to fully utilize
WSM’s newly developed T100B Baggeley Trailer Unit (link). This
trailer performed exceptionally well, allowing for chlorination
to 100 parts per millions at a flow rate of 68litres/second
(245m3/hour)!
In addition to the T100B
Baggeley Trailer Unit, extra provisions for any drop off in the
chlorinated solution had to be planned for. This took shape in
the form of two direct injection stainless steel chemical lances
which could be inserted directly into the main at various points
and, using our T100a trailer unit, maintain the chemical
strength. The process of direct injection through the lances
was advantageous in that it allowed chlorine to be inserted
through the entire main, not just at the top or bottom, and
therefore resulted in a more comprehensive and complete
chlorination process.
After working closely with
South East Water and main contractors Bartletts, WSM’s part in
this large project couldn’t have been more professionally
completed. A combination of our experienced staff, critically
planned program and new T100B Baggeley Trailer Unit resulted in
the successful completion of the project, with all the water
quality samples showing a clean main, as well as coming in one
day under schedule.
Through this important project
WSM have proved once again that their quality of service is
second to none and that their provisions to commission large
diameter pipeline are just as comprehensive as the smaller
diameters and that no job is too big or too small.
